HANAC, Inc. – originally founded by George Douris as the Hellenic American Neighborhood Action Committee – is a New York City-based multi-faceted social services organization. The organization was founded in 1972 to serve the needs of vulnerable populations throughout New York City.

The primary function of a Certified Recovery Peer Advocate is facilitating outreach with individuals currently in a program or considering treatment. Utilizing their recovery expertise, professional training, and lived experience, peers boost individuals’ engagement in treatment and commitment to recovery. CPRAs also connect patients to community-based recovery supports consistent with treatment, recovery, and discharge plans. A certified Peer Recovery Advocate’s duties may include:

Essential duties include but are not limited to:

• Non-clinical crisis support, especially after periods of hospitalization or incarceration

• Educating program participants about various modes of recovery

• Accompanying clients to medical appointments

• Raising awareness of existing social and other support services

• Linking participants to formal recovery supports

• Assisting with applying for benefits

Qualifications:

• High school diploma or GED required; Bachelor’s Degree preferred.

• Certification as a Recovery Peer Advocate is required. (must maintain valid certification)

• A minimum of one year of relevant experience in the field of substance abuse and mental health is required. 

• Applicants must be able to serve as role model of personal recovery and have a desire to support individuals in recovery. 

• A successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to respond sensitively to the needs of our clients and the ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team. 

• Must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 at the commencement of employment or adhere to enhanced protocols if Company determines your job position requires accessing a HANAC worksite.

Work Schedule: 4 hours; one day per week (schedule based on program needs)

Rate of Pay: $20 per hour
